A scientist who specialises in the study of fossils is called a Palaeontologist. They spend a lot of time out in the field looking for and collecting fossils to study, which helps us to understand what the Earth was like in the past. Did you know that the word ‘Dinosaur’ was created by the palaeontologist and founder of the Natural History Museum, Sir Richard Owen? He was the first to realise that dinosaur fossils were different to other reptiles and he named this new group of animals ‘Dinosaurs’!
