Privacy Policy
Compare Furnishings is a UK furniture price-comparison website, independently operated. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, who we share it with, and your rights under the UK GDPR. Contact for anything privacy-related: contact@comparefurnishings.com.
What we collect and why
- Analytics data — pages viewed, browser/device, approximate location, and a random device identifier (Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, HotJar). Collected only if you accept cookies via our banner, and used to understand and improve how the site is used. Legal basis: consent.
- Behavioural events — which products, categories, and searches you view, tied to a random device identifier (never your name). Only with cookie consent; used to improve the site and tailor which deals we show and email. Legal basis: consent.
- Click-out data — when you click through to a retailer we record a random click reference (plus advertising cookie IDs, if you consented) so affiliate commission is attributed to the right click. We do not send retailers your name or email. Legal basis: legitimate interest.
- Email subscription data — your email address, your preferences, and any products you ask us to track, if you sign up for the newsletter or a price-drop alert. We also keep a record of when and how you consented (including IP address), because we are required to be able to prove it. Legal basis: consent.
- Hashed email shared with Meta for advertising — when you sign up for the newsletter or ask us to track a price, we send Meta (Facebook and Instagram) a one-way scrambled version of your email address, produced using a standard technique called SHA-256 hashing. Your actual address is never sent: it is hashed before it leaves our servers, and a hash cannot be turned back into the address it came from. Meta compares that hash against the equivalent hash of the addresses on its own accounts, so it can tell us how many of our ads led to a signup and show our ads to people more likely to be interested. Legal basis: consent — the same consent you give when you tick the signup box, which covers both emailing you and this advertising measurement.
We collect no payment details — purchases happen on the retailer's own site.
Marketing emails
We only email you if you explicitly opted in — no pre-ticked boxes, and we confirm your address with a double-opt-in email before sending anything. Price-drop and back-in-stock alerts are only sent for products you asked us to track. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe and a link to manage your preferences; unsubscribing is as easy as signing up.
Spam protection on our forms
Our email signup and price-tracking forms are protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that a submission comes from a person rather than an automated script. It runs invisibly — there is nothing to click — and to do that it collects technical information about your browser and device, such as your IP address and browser characteristics. It does not use this to build an advertising profile of you, and it is not used to track you across websites. Cloudflare processes this data on our behalf; their Turnstile Privacy Addendum explains what they do with it. Our lawful basis is legitimate interest: keeping our signup forms and our subscribers' inboxes free of automated abuse.
Who we share data with
Service providers acting on our behalf: Resend (email delivery — US-based, covered by the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework), Amazon Web Services and Fly.io (hosting and storage, UK/London region), Cloudflare (form spam protection — see above), Google and HotJar (analytics, only with your consent), and affiliate networks (e.g. Awin, Partnerize) for commission attribution. We never sell your personal data.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram) is different, so it is worth spelling out. Meta receives two things from us. First, analytics and behavioural events through the Meta Pixel, only if you accept cookies. Second — and regardless of the cookie banner — if you sign up for the newsletter or ask us to track a price, we send Meta a hashed (scrambled) version of your email address, so it can match you to your Facebook or Instagram account and tell us which of our ads worked. We never send Meta your address in readable form. Meta is a recipient in its own right for this, not simply a processor acting on our instructions, and it is US-based (covered by the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework). Legal basis: consent. This happens at the moment you sign up; you can object to it or withdraw your consent at any time — see “Your rights” below.
How long we keep it
Raw behavioural events are deleted automatically after 18 months. Subscriber data is kept until you unsubscribe (plus a record of your consent decisions as legal evidence). Analytics retention follows the settings of each analytics tool.
Your rights
You can ask us to access, correct, delete, or export the personal data we hold about you, object to or restrict processing (including marketing and profiling), and withdraw consent at any time. Email contact@comparefurnishings.com and we will respond within one month. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Cookies
Non-essential cookies (analytics, advertising measurement, personalisation) load only after you accept via our cookie banner — declining is as easy as accepting. You can also clear or block cookies in your browser at any time.
