An ottoman bed is the only piece of furniture that gives you back more space than it takes. Lift the base and there is a whole room's worth of storage under the mattress — the spare duvet, the suitcase, the Christmas decorations — without a single extra cupboard against the wall. The catch is that the mechanism does the hard work, and mechanisms vary enormously between a frame that glides up on gas struts and one you have to wrestle. Decide which way it should open before anything else. End-lift is the common choice and gives the deepest, most usable well, but it needs roughly a metre of clear floor beyond the footboard to swing into — hopeless if the bed faces a wall or a chimney breast. Side-lift needs that clearance along one side instead, which is usually easier in a narrow room and much easier if the bed sits in an alcove. Check the struts next: gas-assisted is the difference between lifting a mattress one-handed and needing two people every time. Look for a slatted base rather than a solid one, since anything stored under a mattress needs air moving around it, and check the depth of the well against the thing you actually want to hide — a hard suitcase is far less forgiving than bedding.
