Bedroom · Buying Guide
An ottoman bed is the only piece of furniture that gives you back more space than it takes. Lift the base and there is a whole room's worth of storage under the mattress — the spare duvet, the suitcase, the Christmas decorations — without a single extra cupboard against the wall. The catch is that the mechanism does the hard work, and mechanisms vary enormously between a frame that glides up on gas struts and one you have to wrestle. These are the double (4ft6) ottomans worth shortlisting, from a side-opening frame for rooms with no space at the foot of the bed to an upholstered one that looks like it was chosen rather than tolerated.

From
Feather & Black build beds and nothing else, and it shows in the details that matter on an ottoman: a side-opening base that works in an alcove, a gas-assisted lift you can raise one-handed, and a natural woven finish that reads as furniture rather than as storage. The most expensive way to solve this problem and, if the bed is the room, the one worth saving for.
Best upholstered
Florence Bouclé Ottoman Bed Frame, DoubleFrom
A softly curved bouclé headboard on slim wooden legs, which is a very current shape for a bed that is secretly a storage unit. The pale stone finish lifts a small or north-facing bedroom in a way that grey never manages.
Best for a natural look
Croxley Rattan Ottoman Bed, DoubleFrom
Woven rattan panels set into a warm oak-toned frame — the texture does the decorating, so the room needs very little else. A quietly coastal bed that happens to swallow a season of bedding underneath it.
Best modern shape
Laurent End-Lift Ottoman Bed Frame, DoubleFrom
A softly rounded cream headboard and a low, unbroken base — the sort of bed that makes a plain box bedroom look deliberately styled. The end-lift mechanism is smooth enough that the storage actually gets used rather than admired once.
Best for a guest room
Miles Ottoman Bed Frame, Double, OatmealFrom
A buttoned scroll headboard in oatmeal linen-look fabric — traditional without being fussy, and forgiving of whatever bedding the guest room already owns. The storage underneath is where the spare pillows live between visits.
How we picked
Decide which way it should open before anything else. End-lift is the common choice and gives the deepest, most usable well, but it needs roughly a metre of clear floor beyond the footboard to swing into — hopeless if the bed faces a wall or a chimney breast. Side-lift needs that clearance along one side instead, which is usually easier in a narrow room and much easier if the bed sits in an alcove. Check the struts next: gas-assisted is the difference between lifting a mattress one-handed and needing two people every time. Look for a slatted base rather than a solid one, since anything stored under a mattress needs air moving around it, and check the depth of the well against the thing you actually want to hide — a hard suitcase is far less forgiving than bedding. Everything here is 4ft6 Double, because ottoman frames are sold by size and a King version is a different bed at a different price. Stock and prices are checked live, so anything that sells out drops off this list automatically.
