We track live prices — and price history — across thousands of UK furniture products every day. That let us ask a simple question: when something is marked “on sale”, is it a genuine, temporary discount — or has the “sale” price effectively become the new normal price?

We looked at every product that was discounted and in stock at the end of a fixed 12-week study period, 19 May 2026 – 11 August 2026 — the first full window our continuous price-tracking data covers. This is a dated, one-off analysis rather than a live-updating figure, so a number quoted from this page today will still match it later.

Why this matters

A “was £X, now £Y” label implies urgency — buy now, before the price goes back up. But for a majority of the discounted furniture we track, the discounted price simply is the price, for as long as we've been watching. That's not necessarily dishonest — a retailer's “was” price can be a genuine reference price even if it's rarely charged — but it does mean the discount itself isn't a signal you should act on quickly.

How to spot a permanent “sale”

Check the price history before you buy. Every product page on Compare Furnishings shows a live price chart when we have enough data, so you can see whether the price has actually moved — not just what today's discount claims.
Don't let urgency rush you. A “sale ends soon” banner doesn't mean the price will go up if you wait.
Compare across retailers, not just against the “was” price. A discounted price at one shop can still be higher than another retailer's everyday price for the same or a similar product — that's the whole reason to compare, not just take one retailer's word for the deal.

Methodology

We track price and discount status across the products we compare and keep a running history for each. This analysis covers every product that was discounted and in stock at the end of the study period (19 May 2026 – 11 August 2026) with at least two recorded price snapshots spanning seven or more days within that window, sampled across every retailer we track that publishes a discount price. Figures are aggregated site-wide — we don't attribute results to individual retailers here. This is a fixed, dated report: we compiled it once from that specific 12-week period and it won't change if you come back later, unlike a live-updating statistic.

Three things to know about how to read 49.5%. First, because we only include products that were on sale at the end of the window, this measures how long those specific discounts had been running — not the average lifespan of every discount offered during the period. A short sale that had already ended before the window closed isn't in this sample at all, so read it as “of the sales still running at the end of our study period, most had been running a while”, not as a claim about discounting in general. Second, because our price history is recorded when a listing changes rather than on a fixed schedule, a brief return to full price between two of our snapshots could go unrecorded — which would make a genuinely temporary discount look permanent in our data, not the other way round, so if anything 49.5% likely overstates rather than understates how many of these discounts are truly permanent. Third, “permanent” here means “hadn't come off sale within this specific 12-week window” — not a lifetime claim; we simply don't have data going back further than 19 May 2026.
