What a Sofa Costs in the UK
The median 3-seater sofa costs £1,695, counting each sofa model once. Count each individual listing instead — every fabric of every model as its own entry — and the median rises to £3,349. Both numbers are below; the first is the one to judge a quote against.
We took the current price of every in-stock sofa at the UK retailers we track — 25,638 listings, 3,390 distinct models — and broke it down by type, by material and by where in the range the market actually sits. No averages of averages, no manufacturer RRPs: what is offered today, at the price it is offered at.

What each type of sofa costs
The median is the middle price: half cost less, half cost more. Models counts each sofa once however many fabrics it comes in; listings counts every fabric separately. The quartiles and range are listing-level, and mark where the middle half of what is on offer sits — a sanity check on any single quote you are looking at.

How the market splits by price
The same data, read as budget bands, at listing level. A corner sofa is not simply “more expensive than a 2-seater” — the shape of the range differs too.

What moves the price
Holding size constant — 3-seaters only, at listing level — the upholstery is the clearest single lever we can measure, and it does not run in the order most people expect:
- Fabric: £1,695 median, across 1,159 listings. The default covering.
- Leather: £1,995 median, across 990 listings. Faux leather is counted separately and is not in this figure.
- Velvet: £3,995 median, across 327 listings.
Velvet coming out above leather is not a claim that velvet is an intrinsically dearer covering — it is a claim about which sofas each material appears on. Velvet is concentrated on deep-buttoned and designer-led ranges at the premium end of what we track, while a lot of leather sits on volume-market recliner and suite ranges. The same caution applies to the whole section: frame construction, filling, and whether a sofa is made to order all move the price too, and none of those are reliably published in a product feed.
How much of it is on sale
2.6% of the sofa listings we track carry a markdown right now — a discounted price below the retailer's own list price. That is high enough to be worth knowing before a “sale ends Sunday” banner persuades you to hurry: for sofas, some kind of discount is close to the normal state of the market rather than an event.
